No more sewage or effluent is seeping into Pietà creek, which was fouling it with a pungent smell, after two leaks in the sewage system were closed off.

A Health Ministry spokesman said “no effluent was noted” after an inspection was carried out on Friday by environment directorate officials.

Moreover, no sewage overflows were found in the area and, over the past weeks, no more complaints were filed, he added.

Last month, residents turned to The Times for help, complaining of an unbearable, rancid stench, coupled with a dense, milky white patch that was seen spreading into the sea.

Although never identified by the health authorities, Malta Dairy Products had confirmed one of its pipes had been damaged and was repaired.

However, sewage kept seeping out, and the complaints persisted. Eventually, all sources contributing to the seepage were identified and the necessary action was taken by the responsible party to rectify the problem, the ministry spokesman said.

“No leaks were noted by our officials. We are informed by the Waste Water Unit of the Water Services Corporation that, three weeks ago, a stoppage in main sewer was removed in the area indicated,” he said.
