Wasteserv is carrying out studies related to setting up a waste incinerator, the Resources Ministry has told The Times.
The last facility needed to ensure sustainable management of waste
Wasteserv CEO Saviour Abela mentioned incineration last week during a planning hearing that approved an extension to the Għallis landfill.
Mr Abela had said there was a pending application for the Malta North recycling plant, situated next to Għallis, which would handle most of the waste from the north of the country.
Eventually there would be an incineration plant that would handle the balance of the rubbish left, he said.
When asked to clarify, a ministry spokesman for the Resources Ministry said Wasteserv embarked on the process related to setting up an incinerator, including site selection, impact assessments, technology assessment and financial feasibility.
“To this effect the bids received after a public call for tenders for such studies to be carried out are currently under evaluation,” the spokesman said.
However, it was the last in a series of facilities “required to ensure the sustainable management of wastes generated in the Maltese Islands intended to treat the remaining balance of waste fractions, which cannot be treated by other means or technologies that have been established or are in the pipeline,” he said.
