Depiro and Luxol, among the most consistent teams in women’s basketball this season, reached the Louis Borg Cup final at the expense of Honey Athleta and Loyola respectively.

Depiro led for the entire first leg last week to impose their superiority over Athleta who changed ends 28-36 behind.

After the interval, Depiro extended their lead to 52-39 to put the issue beyond doubt, even-tually winning the match 75-54.

Depiro continued to build on that lead as the second leg got underway.

Athleta, however, offered stronger resistance this time to reduce the gap to three points, 32-29, at one stage of the match.

In the end, it was still the Depiro girls who wrapped the tie on a comfortable aggregate of 132-98 thanks to a clear 57-44 score in their favour.

Luxol were in total control in the other semi-final against Loyola.

Midway through the first leg they led 34-18 and they further stretched that advantage to start the last ten minutes 50-31 ahead.

Loyola were nowhere to be seen as Luxol opened a 26-point lead for the second leg following a 71-45 victory.

Luxol knew they had more than one foot in the cup final but still took no chances in the return leg even though they eased the pace for Loyola to pull back to 39-26 at half-time.

Loyola’s recovery continued (48-47) as they tried to exit this competition with their heads high.

However, Luxol then applied pressing tactics and the baskets of Sarah Pace and Mandy Sciortino paved the way for a 66-55 win and a 144-111 success on aggregate.
