To coincide with Australia Day 2013, Lawrence Dimech was recently reappointed as a People of Australia Ambassador.

These ambassadors are people who are recognised for their contribution to the community and are chosen from every state and territory of Australia.

Judge Raul Soulio, the chair of the Australia Multicultural Council, said he was struck not only by the commitment and enthusiasm of the inaugural ambassadors but by the insights that have been offered by the local communities.

He said he was pleased to see Mr Dimech return for another year. The appointees initially serve for 12 months but some are chosen to serve for a further 12 months.

The principal role of the People of Australia Ambassadors is to promote the principles of Australia’s multicultural policy and to emphasise a strong commitment to inclusion, social cohesion and action to unite all Australians.

These ambassadors are a critical link, providing feedback from local communities on issues of interest to the Australian Multicultural Council and the Government.

The ambassadors meet at least twice a year in Canberra to discuss issues relating to multiculturalism.

Mr Dimech is a veteran journalist both in Malta and Australia, the first editor of the Maltese Herald and first Maltese consul-general in New South Wales.
