St Monica School, Birkirkara, held an event entitled Speak Up for the Environment during which students delivered presentations to the whole school on issues related to environmental conservation.

The event served not only as an innovative way to raise environmental awareness but also taught the participants how to conduct research and hone their public-speaking skills.

Some students’ presentations consisted of singing, dancing and playing music linked to the environmental theme.

The presentations covered an array of subjects, ranging from the traditional gruesome killing of whales to tips to minimise harm to the environment by using eco-friendly products and practices.

The audience applauded the students for their effort. All the participants were awarded certificates by Vince Attard, executive president of Nature Trust, and prizes were awarded to the best presentations adjudicated by a panel of three judges comprising Keith Buhagiar, head of the Department of Environmental Studies, Audrey Gauci, Ekoskola co-ordinator, and Yvette Micallef from the English Speaking Union.
