A 14-year-old girl who was allegedly sexually abused by her grandfather and a close family friend had tried to commit suicide, a police officer said in court yesterday.

The grandfather, 53, from Ta’ Xbiex and the 60-year-old man from Birkirkara pleaded not guilty to sexually abusing the minor when she was between the ages of 8 and 10.

Police Inspector Yvonne Farrugia said the girl was now in care after her suicide attempt.

Magistrate Audrey Demicoli remanded the two men in custody and ordered a ban on the publication of the names.
