More than €75 million was spent on the heritage sector in the past five years, according to Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.

Touring an extension of the archaeology museum in Valletta, with his wife, Kate, he praised Heritage Malta for making it more accessible to children.

Dr Gonzi said such initiatives attract tourists, noting the island’s record numbers over the past legislature. The museum had about 75,000 visitors a year, including 20,000 children.

He urged the Maltese to better appreciate their history and said this was why the Government invested €36 million on bastion restoration and over €10 million to protect prehistoric temples.
