Transcripts which according to the police prove that bribery took place between former judge Ray Pace and two men were exhibited in court yesterday.

The evidence was presented in the case against Raymond Caruana, a 51-year-old truck driver from Żebbuġ, and Sandro Psaila, a 40-year-old restaurateur of Valletta, who stand accused of trying to bribe Dr Pace.

Court appointed expert Daniela Mangion drew up the transcripts from recordings made by the Security Service, which tapped the mobile phones of the judge and the two men.

In previous testimony, Police Superintendent Paul Vassallo said the intercepts between Mr Psaila and Mr Caruana showed the two men discussing how convicted drug trafficker Darren Desira’s jail term could be increased.

Mr Desira was jailed for 18 years last year by another judge who was not implicated.

One of the intercepts was from Dr Pace to Mr Psaila informing him that Mr Desira had been jailed for 18 years.

Asked whether money was exchanged, Supt. Vassallo said that when Dr Pace informed Mr Psaila about Mr Desira’s prison term, the reply to the judge was “I will give them to you”.

The case continues.
