Alternattiva Demokratika chairman Michael Briguglio yesterday revealed he had received a threatening letter, which “warned him” against speaking out on the Armier boathouses issue.

Dr Briguglio who immediately filed a report at the Sliema police station, said: “I am not intimidated by the threat I received and which also threatened my family. I will immediately inform the police if other threats occur.”

AD has been consistent in its stand against the illegal Armier boathouses and over the years repeatedly called for their removal, arguing that squatters should not be permitted to enjoy the fruits of their crime.

In its electoral manifesto, AD states it is not “being held hostage by big business, hunters, trappers, fireworks fanatics, Armier squatters, and big land developers”.

Sliema council and Armier Development Ltd condemned the threat.

Armier Development said it was against threats and violence and would continue working with the authorities as it had done for the past 35 years on any issue relating to boathouses in the North West.

In a press conference in front of Castille yesterday, AD spokesman Arnold Cassola called for more transparency in governance. “AD in Parliament will make sure that the Whistleblower’s Act, the Data Protection Act and the Freedom of Information Act are entrenched in the Constitution,” Dr Cassola said.

AD also called for the prescription period on criminal acts to be increased and for a “serious” law to regulate party financing.

AD deputy chairman Carmel Cacopardo said he was informed the Electoral Commission will not heed the advice of Data Protection Commissioner Joseph Ebejer and will distribute a list of patients in hospitals and homes for the elderly, every day until election day.

“This means that the PN and PL will ride roughshod over everyone in their quest for votes,” said Mr Cacopardo.
