GAMBIN. On January 28, JOAN, née Mangion, aged 68, passed away at her residence comforted by the rites of Holy Church. An ex-teacher at St Joseph School, Blata l-Bajda, she leaves to mourn her loss her beloved husband John, her son Karl and his wife Christine and her grandson Nicholas, her brothers and sisters, Twanny and Natty, Lillian and John, Charles, Dorothy and Colin, Joe and Rita, and Jacqui, as well as Josette and Tony, Monica, Bella and Patrick, Bernadette and Michael, nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. The funeral leaves her residence at 1.30pm today for Santa Maria degli Angeli church, Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq, where Mass præsente cadavere will be said at 2pm, followed by interment at the family chapel at Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. No flowers by request, but donations to Malta Hospice Movement will be greatly appreciated. Lord, grant her eternal rest.

GOUDER. On January 27, at Mater Dei Hospital, CARMELO, aged 84, passed away peacefully comforted by the rites of Holy Church and surrounded by his family. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife Doris, née Mifsud, his children Carmen and Alex Azzopardi, Joe and Miriam, Rose and Joe Vella, Mario and Caroline, Connie and Roger Mangion and Bronia and Mark Farrugia, his many nephews and nieces, his brother and sister, in-laws, other relatives and friends. The funeral cortège leaves Mater Dei Hospital today at 1.45pm for St Peter parish church, Birżebbuġa, where Mass præsente cadavere will be celebrated at 2.30pm, followed by interment at Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. Lord, grant him eternal rest.

SCERRI. On January 27, CARMELO of Sliema, widower of Carmela, née Rocco, aged 91, passed away peacefully at Mater Dei Hospital, comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his loss his children Carmen and her husband Lino Chetcuti, Frank and Jill Scerri, Anna and Austin Calleja, his beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, his sister Stella Farrugia and many relatives and friends. The funeral leaves Mater Dei Hospital today at 1.30pm for the Sacred Heart parish church, Sliema, where Mass præsente cadavere will be said at 2pm, followed by interment in the family grave at the Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. No flowers by request but donations to Id-Dar tal-Providenza, Siġġiewi, will be greatly appreciated. Lord, grant him eternal rest. The family regret they are unable to receive visitors.

VELLA. On January 27, at Mater Dei Hospital, GRACE, née Muscat, widow of Emmanuel, aged 74, passed away peacefully comforted by the rites of Holy Church. She leaves to mourn her loss her beloved children Mary, Margaret and her husband Giovanni Mifsud, Lucy and her husband Vanni Camilleri, Paul and his wife Maria, Dorothy and her husband Paul Vella, Saviour and his wife Pauline and Roger and his wife Mary, her 17 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, her sisters Stella Muscat, Carmen Galea and Maria and her husband Joe Bonanno, Patricia Muscat, widow of her brother Paul, her in-laws, nephews and nieces, other relatives and friends. The funeral cortège leaves Mater Dei Hospital today at 2.15pm for Mġarr parish church where Mass præsente cadavere will be said at 3pm, followed by interment at Mġarr cemetery. No flowers by request, but donations to Id-Dar tal-Providenza, Siġġiewi, will be greatly appreciated. Lord, grant her eternal rest. The family thank the doctors and nurses at the Cardiac Surgical Ward of Mater Dei Hospital for their care and attention during their mother’s illness.

Hail the Year of the Snake

A Chinese dance and singing troupe from the Jiangsu Province will be in attendance at a dinner heralding the new Chinese year, which is dedicated to the snake.

Its participation was made possible with the cooperation of the Chinese Embassy in Malta and the Chinese Cultural Centre.

Organised by the Malta-China Friendship Society, the dinner, that will include Chinese, Japanese and Korean food, will be held at the Preluna Hotel on Saturday.
