PM inaugurates 'Job Bridge'
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi this morning inaugurated a new tailor-made training programme for persons with special needs.
He said its purpose is to help integrate them in the employment sector.
He also announced that the government is planning to open two new resource centres for persons with disability - in Hamrun and in Paola.
The new programme called Job Bridge, is administered by the Employment and Training Corporation and aims to give specialised training to its clients, making it easier for them to find a job.
Dr Gonzi said the government has been investing heavily in the concept of integration and just 0.3% of persons with disabilities attended specialised schools. The rest were integrated in mainstream education.

One hopes that this "bridge" will serve a useful purpose and not be like its Valletta predecessor, an expensive bridge that leads nowhere.

Dear Mr Zarb
Don't make snide comments about projects that have made Malta, and especially our Valletta the beautiful city it was designed to be. if you cannot appreciate this than you really should take a cruise and get out a bit, and see this country from the eyes of the people who see it for the first time! Yes the tourist that generate so many jobs and wealth for all of us to enjoy!

This is a v. good initiative however saying only 0.3% of persons with disabilities attend specialised schools does not mean that all the others are well placed and integrated. For some yes it has worked perfectly but truth is a good number of children are struggling and suffering as the mainstream is not suitable for them for a whole day. Specialised units within schools are greatly needed.

Well said marika but training should begin from education department first .and provide quilified and dedicated LSA not sending them to courses after they are employed.

Wish we had an Election every year. At least we would have three months of work and decision making, as otherwise only a little will be done!!!

The only problem with the ETC is that it is located only in Valletta at Hal Far and a few other places, not more than 4 in number, I believe. I cannot see any reason why there should not be ETC representatives at the local Social Services establishments. It would be a boon to the population. ETC has remained too centralised after about 25 years of existence, and this creates unnecessary hassle.
