A 24-year-old man was yesterday charged with trying to kill his sister and her husband by allegedly firing a gun in their direction on Saturday afternoon.

Magistrate Tonio Micallef Trigona heard Christian Cardona, from Siġġiewi, plead not guilty to the attempted murder of Silvianne Falzon and her husband, George, whom he also allegedly stabbed. He was also charged with slightly injuring Mr Falzon, being in illegal possession of the weapons and relapsing.

Mr Cardona’s lawyer, Joseph Giglio, pointed out that there were two conflicting versions of the events. His client was denying even firing a gun and claimed the knife belonged to Mr Falzon.

Dr Giglio said there was tension between the Cardonas and Mr Falzon. On Saturday, Mr Falzon had turned up at their house and Mr Cardona saw that he had a knife. Mr Cardona and his father pushed Mr Falzon back into his car and he drove off.

Mr Falzon headed to the police station where he claimed that Mr Cardona had tried to stab him and shot at him.

However, Dr Giglio added, the police had found no evidence of a gun being fired and Mr Falzon only suffered a cut.

This was confirmed by Police Inspector Roderick Zammit who also said the police were investigating Mr Falzon.

Mr Cardona was granted bail against a €1,000 deposit and a personal guarantee of €10,000 and was ordered not to speak to his sister or her husband.
