American rock diva Tina Turner (pictured) is on her way to becoming a Swiss citizen.

She has lived in the Zurich suburb of Kuesnacht since the mid-1990s, and the Zuerichsee-Zeitung newspaper said on its website that the local council had announced its decision to grant the 73-year-old citizenship in an official notice.

The decision still requires formal approval from state and federal authorities.

Police said the man, who had 118 dollars (€88) on him, but refused to hand it over, appeared drunk and was arrested on a charge of theft of services.

Mr Powers’ family found ‘an extraordinary collection’ of memorabilia locked away last year as they prepared to sell the family home, according to John McInnis Auctioneers in Amesbury.

Stephen King for gun curbs

Horror writer Stephen King has called for three ‘reasonable measures’ to curb gun violence, following the school shooting massacre in Newtown, Connecticut.

The author, who is a gun owner, says he hopes to provoke constructive debate.

He wants background checks on all gun sales and bans on high-capacity magazines and military-style weapons like the rifle used in the Newtown shooting, which killed 20 children and six school officials. (PA)
