The University’s Cottonera Resource Centre was recently inaugurated by Education Minister Dolores Cristina to act as a bridge between the University and communities in the inner harbour area, facilitating resource transfer and capacity building.

The centre’s main aims are to promote higher and tertiary education in Cottonera by building on its existing skills and resources, and providing information, support and guidance to residents from the area interested in furthering their education.

The centre is involved in a pilot action research project involving 12 students aged 11 to 15 from St Margaret’s College who were identified as having high educational potential, being offered peer mentoring, family-based, school-based and community-based support.

Another 24 children of primary school age were sponsored to attend Kids on Campus.

In future, the centre will organise conferences, seminars and similar activities related to the Cottonera area, collaborate with local councils and civil society on projects, initiatives and events to promote the area, conduct or facilitate research on issues or topics related to the area, and make research results more accessible to the community.
