I refer to Claire Bonello’s article ‘It’s one big blame game’ (The Sunday Times, January 20). The PN’s barefaced lie regarding my vote in Parliament in May 2010 and its upshot were not “a storm in a teacup” as clichéd in the article.

Any characterisation which belittles what happened that day and simply refers to the PN’s side “insistence” or claim, as if it was just another political spat, is flawed and gives illegitimate credence, even if inadvertently, to the blatant dishonesty perpetrated by GonziPN that day. It was a lie orchestrated for the purpose of saving face, with complete disregard for the truth, and unbecoming the honour of parliamentary representatives.

The unassailable proof of my correct Yes vote with the Opposition, has been well documented, and was plain and obvious from the Clerk’s records, the audio recordings and from the non-reaction in the House of Representatives, as opposed to the instant ferment whenever an MP actually votes contrary to their side/whip. This is exactly what happened when Mario Galea voted ‘Yes’.

In the subsequent days, the manner how four GonziPN MPs stooped so low as to make shameless claims, inverting the truth and picking on me, at the time that I was pregnant, was an affront to basic decency and the height of incivility. Therefore, in the face of the PN clique’s mendacity, even in the country’s highest democratic institution, the PL leadership’s reaction was necessary and justified.

I believe that, beyond myself being on the receiving end at that parliamentary vote in 2010, with Mr Speaker’s complacency to say the least, the larger problem our country faces is the ease and willingness with which GonziPN has persistently and out-rightly lied and twisted the truth in a deliberate manner.

No lie or deception is without consequences, and as a result of so many such GonziPN deceitful actions, the range of people who have suffered encompass the multitude of Maltese and Gozitans, without distinction whether they are traditionally Labour or Nationalist party supporters.

The PL has opened its doors to people of good will from all sections of society, regardless of past voting tendencies and has asked for their support in starting a new chapter for Malta. Let’s not forget that shameful day in Parliament, where despite my state, I was not afraid to confront that lie. This coming election will be an opportunity for the electorate to think for themselves and rise against the subtle GonziPN intimidation. It is time to separate the truth from the lies, by choosing PL’s plans for a better country for all of us, versus GonziPN’s scaremongering and the empty promises of the clique.
