A guidance document on the renewal or amendment of planning permits was published yesterday by the Planning Authority for public consultation.

Mepa hopes it will eliminate confusion among developers by establishing clear guidelines and procedures for renewing permits that are about to expire.

All renewal applications need to be submitted before the expiry date. These will be screened and processed, Mepa said.

All renewal applications where no changes have taken place onsite will be accepted and a further validity period given.

When amendment permission is granted on an existing valid permit, the amended permit will not have a new validity period, and applicants who simultaneously intend to renew and amend a planning permit no longer need to apply twice.

Mepa said consultation meetings will be held in the coming days.

The Labour party has just made an electoral proposal to extend planning permits beyond their expiry date of five years, but under certain conditions it has yet to elaborate.

Mepa’s document is at www.mepa.org.mt/public-consultation. Submissions and comments can be sent to renewals@mepa.org.mt by February 13.
