Last Sunday, on a grey afternoon’s sightseeing in Valletta, near the Upper Barrakka lift overlooking the Grand Harbour, I was struck by the serendipitous juxtapositioning of the guns for the Saluting Battery opposite an unobtainable extravagance for most – a super yacht at berth.
Not only was the scene a perfect metaphor for modern Malta, but also for globalisation of capitalism and its implications.
All that needs to be done is for the muzzles of the guns to be sighted by being shifted slightly to the right for a 21-gun salute.
