Athleta A-Z lost their Louis Borg Cup title yesterday as they were beaten over two legs by Depiro Pavi for an aggregate score of 136-119.
Depiro were the surprise winners of the first match on Saturday (66-61) and they repeated their feat yesterday when they beat Joe Galea’s team 70-58.
The margin of victory may give a wrong impression though of how the two-legged final developed.
In fact, Athleta were enjoying the overall lead for most of the match yesterday and after going in for the break leading 31-28, they went on to extend their lead to 55-47 midway through the final quarter.
The cup seemed heading Athleta’s way but their hopes were jolted late on when they had three players fouled out. Depiro looked in better shape in that crucial stage of the match and went on to pot a series of points without reply to take the upperhand.
Athleta’s cause was also not aided after conceding technical fouls for persistent protests and Depiro’s Roderick Vella kept hold of his nerves from the free-throw line to secure his team’s first Louis Borg Cup title.
