The Labour Party will unveil a concrete roadmap for Gozo based on the promise to create employment opportunities for Gozitans in Gozo, party leader Joseph Muscat said this evening.

Addressing a political activity in Xewkija, Dr Muscat said it was clear that Gozo too was ready to work for the change in direction the country needed.

The island had seen a lot better.

It had seen better infrastructure and more investment under both governments but in the last five years, Gozo was abandoned. Young people complained of lack of employment opportunities and had to seek jobs in Malta or abroad.

Tourism also had to be revived.

Dr Muscat said that the government did not keep and did not deliver on its promises.

“The government has no credibility, especially in the energy sector. We announced our plans and now we expect the government to tell us its plan. The gas pipeline is important and our project includes this project but we cannot wait for another eight years with these hefty bills,” he said.

Dr Muscat referred to what John Pace, a former Enemalta engineer, wrote in The Times yesterday, that international oil and gas giant Eni had offered to link Malta to a gas pipeline for free.

“We still have to hear why the offer was refused. The same engineer said there is a lobby on oil importation. Who has an interest that Malta remains dependent on oil,” Dr Muscat asked.

He said that had the BWSC extension been gas-fired, Malta would not be discussing ways to reduce the energy tariffs.

The government’s claim that it wanted to change the plant to gas did not make sense. It was like someone buying a petrol car and as soon as it was on the road, he changed the engine to diesel.

This matter, the Labour leader said, was a delicate issue on which the government did not have a concrete plan.

Dr Muscat appealed to Gozitans to join the movement which had its doors wide open for people who wanted to see a better country with a change in direction.
