A hunter who fell through ice on the Colorado River was rescued after spending more than 30 minutes in the water.

The man, believed to be aged 60, was treated for hypothermia after the incident near Grand Junction.

Fire chiefs said he went onto the ice after a dog that was chasing a duck or goose.

Other hunters saw him fall and called the emergency services, and he held on to an ice shelf with one leg until help arrived. A firefighter with a floating board swam out and helped him to safety. The dog was unharmed. (AP)

‘Generous’ lottery winner!

A £1 million lottery winner has promised to treat his wife to a sink, The Sun reports.

David Baxter, 63, of Baldock, Hertfordshire, got lucky in the EuroMillions raffle and the first thing he bought for himself was a pair of £9.99 slippers.

He admitted having nearly thrown away his ticket and will now buy his wife Carol the steel kitchen sink “she has always wanted” while continuing to work at Luton Airport. (PA)

Men acquitted over ‘looking gay’

A Cameroon appeal court on Monday overturned the convictions of two men found guilty of homosexuality and sentenced to five years in jail for cross-dressing and wearing make-up.

Homosexuality is illegal in Cameroon but recent incidents have highlighted growing tension between a largely conservative society and a younger generation less concerned by the issue. (Reuters)

King Herod exhibition in Israel

Israel’s national museum is preparing an exhibition on King Herod, the Jewish ruler under Roman occupation two millennia ago.

The display, billed as the world’s first, includes a reconstructed tomb and sarcophagus of Herod, known for huge building projects.

Palestinians object to the exhibit because it displays artefacts from West Bank sites. (PA)

Dedicated cleaner hangs up her duster

A British cleaner hung up her duster yesterday after 41 years at the same pub.

Sheila Nicholson, 71, worked six days a week until 18 months ago at the Red Lion in Chester-le-Street, County Durham.

And the great-grandmother still worked five days a week, starting her six-hour shifts at 6am.

Working at the Red Lion in Front Street runs in her family, as her mother worked there for 25 years. Mrs Nicholson, who has four sons, 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, is known for her thorough cleaning.

Sir Elton is a dad for the second time

Sir Elton John says his family is now complete after he became a parent for the second time.

He and partner David Furnish said they were “overwhelmed with happiness” at the birth of Elijah Joseph Daniel Furnish-John. The new arrival was born in Los Angeles on Friday, weighing in at 8lb 4oz, via a surrogate mother, according to Hello!. The couple already have a two-year-old boy called Zachary.

The new baby shares his middle name, Daniel, with one of Sir Elton’s 1970s hit singles. Sir Elton, 65, and film producer Furnish have been in a relationship for almost 20 years and have been civil partners since 2005. (PA)
