The Electoral Commission is reprinting the voting documents for the general election and the local council elections.

A large number of documents had to be dumped because they carried the signature of former Chief Electoral Commissioner Carmel Degabriele instead of Salvu Gauci, who has been commissioner for the past four years.

There are 332,000 voting documents for the general elections and 175,000 for the elections in half of the local councils in Malta and Gozo.

Contacted by timesofmalta.com Mr Gauci played down this issue and said that this was a technical mistake which was being rectified.

“Mistakes happen in every process and we stopped the original printing as soon as we discovered the mistake,” Mr Gauci said.

Asked whether this would mean an added cost, Mr Gauci said that all documents would have to be re-printed but the cost was low as the mistake was discovered early and the documents had not been laminated in plastic yet.

Voting documents will start being distributed door-to-door by the police accompanied by party representatives as soon as the printing is over.
