A prisoner had reported receiving drugs from another prisoner who, together with her son, is being accused of trafficking in prison, a court heard today.

Jason Decelis, 35 and his mother Concetta 57 are in prison for having caused the death of Rachel Bowdler, 18, through a drug overdose in 2001.

New trafficking charges were filed against them after the prison authorities found drugs in a skip at the prisons. They allegedly traced the drug back to the accused.

Taking the witness stand this morning, prison warder Anna Vella said that on November 21, 2009, she called to work and was informed that the day before, prisoner Carmen Spiteri had reported she had received drugs from Ms Decelis.

According to Ms Spiteri, correction officer Nina Formosa had initially told her to throw the drugs away. She did so after putting them in a coffee jar.

However, she realised that what she had done was wrong and went to retrieve the drugs she had thrown away.

Ms Vella said that the drugs had been passed to her in an envelope and not a coffee jar and that she waited until the following Monday when the prisons director was at work to report the event.

Ms Formosa who was called to testify but did not turn up was fined €70.

The case continues.
