Labour leader Joseph Muscat urged supporters in Zejtun to play a central role in healing the political wounds of the 1960s and 1980s and welcome new people to the party's movement.

He was addressing a large crowd in the Labour stronghold known for strong political rivalry, where Nationalist supporters were in 1986 attacked for organising a mass meeting in the area known as Tal-Barrani.

"We have hurt each other for too long... Let us sow the seed of unity and shout out together with one voice, Nationalists and Labourites: Malta belongs to all of us," he told enthused supporters as he urged them to welcome Nationalists with open arms.

He said this election bore "historical significance" because Maltese people of all political colours were determined to work together for the good of the entire country.

Dr Muscat said Labour had issued concrete proposals every day since the start of the campaign but the PN had remained absolutely silent.

Turning to energy, he warned that the Government had loaded Enemalta with debt which would eventually lead to its workers being treated like those of the Dockyard, Air Malta and  the public transport.

"It is only with our plan that your jobs are guaranteed," he told Enemalta employees, adding that this plan was also crucial to the country's economic survival.

He thanked the PN for bringing over a British expert who confirmed that a gas power station made more sense than one that operates with heavy fuel oil.

Dr Muscat also said it was disrespectful of the Government to claim that there was not a high incidence of cancer or asthma in the south.

Dr Muscat added that he was surprised to hear the Prime Minister dismissing Labour's proposal regarding MPs being paid according to their attendance in Parliament. He said no other worker gets paid for not going to work.
