Pictures: Heavy hailstorm damages cars, solar heaters

A heavy hailstorm shortly before 1pm turned areas in the North and East of Malta white, brought traffic briefly to a standstill and damaged cars and solar heaters.

The Civil Protection Department issued a weather warning, urging motorists to avoid low lying areas because of the risk of flooding.

A reader said hail stones 'as big as tennis balls' had been seen in Gharghur.

Streets in various localities were carpeted in white, notably in Mosta, Mgarr, Naxxar and Burmarrad.

I can't believe how selfish and idiotic some people are. You wouldn't say that to the people of Naxxar and Mosta who had their cars dented, today.
You should be ashamed of yourself Mr Ellul:(

How pathetic c. Ellul.

Supposed you go out to your car and like I did, I found that the car had somebody had hit my car forty times with a hammer. That's exactly what the hailstones did to my car.

Woud you think differently.

If solar panels and solar water heaters are damaged the person involved should seek for damages under warranty as if you read well the specs of most of the good quality panels they are tested for large hail at high speed

It all depends where you are from!
Yes in the Paceville, Pembroke, St Andrews area they were the size of tennis balls.
Damage can be seen on cars and solar water heaters, especially those using vacuum tubes.
Not having it in your area does not mean it did not occur!

Jocelyn Erskine-Kellie

Jan 15th, 18:51

In St Paul's Bay they were about the size of table tennis balls - very small table tennis balls!

Well, it is a convertible after all isn't it? so it has coverted into a sieve. At least it is a proper sun roof now, no need to open it....sorry, just looking at the bright side of life.

Melita MIA metreology reporting is a farce!
We still get temp and rain readings in decimal fractions
Pictorials are anything but impressive/hardly ever any warnings
It is normal the reporting hangs out minimum twice a day
Favorite/TVM/ONE/NET depicts different readings/all a go go
Please get serious about forecast presentations

Maybe you didn't look at the weather forecast, but I knew on Sunday that it would rain today.

We lived in Madliena the first time we arrived in Malta from the UK, its the worst place to live on the island, not only dangerous roads at the bottom opposit St Andrews, but also the people that live there seem to think they God's gift to the rest on the island, Maybe the man above is trying to liven the people up a bit as they are the most snobbish lot we have ever come across. Gozo is the place

@ Paul Hawker. I live in Madliena, please give me your e-mail and we meet for a coffee. Firstly you most certainly do not know the people of Madliena. Once my semi-basement got flooded and even the Honorable Judge living across the street and his family came to help! The roads are not dangerous, it's that some people are idiots! Roads do not provoke accidents, people do!

john Attard

Jan 15th, 17:46

Mr. Hawker. I live in San Pawl tat-Targa and the storm did not spare us either. All cars here have dents and solar panels are broken. No-one is trying to upbeat the situation. Your comments are out of place.
