Since it was first launched back in 2006, the Mużika Mod Ieħor (MMI) series of podcasts has practically covered most areas of Maltese music, offering a regular audio chronicle of what is going on in the local music scene, be it mainstream or otherwise.
As has now become the tradition Toni Sant, who is behind the MMI concept, held the 2012 edition of the Listeners’ Picks online polls, the results of which were revealed during the 325th edition of his weekly podcasts.
The winners of the poll’s five categories were Red Electrick, whose Unplugged Sessions was voted Top Album; Joseph Calleja, whose Mario Lanza tribute album Be My Love won the Top Overseas-based Release; Adie, whose Cry for You won the Top Video category; metal act Angelcrypt, whose Eternal Conquest was voted Top Single and, from Gozo, Divine Sinners, whose Bipolar Overdrive won the Top Online Release category.
Commenting about the polls, Sant said: “These polls continue to be the only fully inclusive annual voting system for the local music scene.
“The results show the diversity very clearly… I mean, Angelcrypt’s Eternal Conquest was voted the Top Single for 2012, despite getting barely any radio airplay in Malta.”
Sant commented on the transparency of the whole process, which is done via a Facebook app developed by Kenneth Vella.
“In recent years we have also made sure to keep a full list of nominations and results visible through the M3P website.
“The whole exercise is meant to be a series of snapshots of the year in local music, and you’ll be hard pressed to argue against its success in that spirit.”
Though not fully comprehensive, the MMI Listeners’ Picks polls remain the most representative of the broad spectrum of genres populating the Maltese music scene.
