You recently reported (December 29) that the Archdeacon of the Gozo Cathedral Chapter was disappointed to learn that the planning authority’s environment directorate has opposed the car park project proposed around the Citadel.

On the other hand it appears that most people support the directorate’s decision.

I assume that this recent decision follows a past objection by the planning authority when the Victoria council around a decade ago presented similar plans for another car park just flanking the opposite part of the Citadel.

I happened to be mayor of Victoria at the time and still recollect the discussions I had with the authority on the utility of both car parks. I insisted that once various parts of Malta’s bastions shaded a couple of car parks there should be no reason why Gozo should not follow suit.

I still feel that both the car park proposed by the Cathedral Chapter as well as that proposed by the Victoria council in areas that happened to be both applicants’ property should be given the green light in view of the city’s serious parking problem.
