It was a three-stop tour for Joseph Muscat yesterday morning as he hammered home his party’s energy proposal to different audiences.

In a kerbside press conference in Fgura, followed by a small crowd of supporters, Dr Muscat defended the proposed projects that underpin the Labour Party plan to build a gas-fired power station.

Asked by The Times whether any studies were undertaken to determine whether the proposed location of two gas storage tanks was appropriate, Dr Muscat said other options were available on the same footprint.

“We are confident that the identified location is feasible but it is one option of others available on the same footprint at Delimara,” he insisted.

A former Enemalta chairman was yesterday quoted by this newspaper saying the identified location, a waterfront mound of rubble, was not ideal because it served as a counterweight to the cliff face. This observation was also shared by Finance Minister Tonio Fenech.

In Fgura, a locality long dogged by the black dust problem, Dr Muscat said his party’s strategy to shift energy generation immediately to gas meant cleaner air.

In another visit to the Golden Harvest, a bread-making factory in San Ġwann, Dr Muscat told a small group of workers the tariff-reduction plan would ensure jobs were safeguarded because companies would be more competitive.

He insisted the plan would not only give industry lower electricity tariffs but give them the opportunity to use liquefied natural gas on which the power station will run.

Dr Muscat started the day in his hometown where he visited Burmarrad Commercials, a company specialising in the sale and lease of commercial vehicles.
