Every Maltese had the basic right to vote and those Maltese living abroad should be given a reasonable amount of time to register at their nearest embassy or consulate to be able to vote at the upcoming national elections, AD spokesman on EU and international affairs Arnold Cassola said.

He said in a statement that AD had insisted over the years on the need for Maltese expatriates to have the right to vote abroad.

But notwithstanding the various amendments to electoral legislation, including the most recent, PN and the PL never agreed with AD on the matter.

The latest statements from the Prime Minister, passing the buck onto the opposition were a symptom of the democractic stagnation within a two-party system, Prof. Cassola said.

He said that those wanting to vote could be given the opportunity to cast their vote at their nearest embassies over a span of three days in early March, in the presence of officially delegated Maltese diplomats stationed in the embassy.

This would give ample time for the ballot boxes to be flown over to Malta for the counting.
