Another four new energy proposals were announced by Labour leader Joseph Muscat this morning.

Speaking during a visit to Bulebel Industrial Estate, Dr Muscat said Labour had a holistic policy related to solar energy. On being elected to government, it would set up solar parks that could produce 20 megawatts of electricity per year.

He said that people who live in apartments and do not have access to roofs would be given the financial and commercial facility to invest in solar panels on top of public buildings.

Dr Muscat said that Labour would also set up an Energy Efficiency Support Unit.

Through this unit, every household would be given the possibility to have an energy audit, on a voluntary basis. The household would then be given advice on how to reduce consumption. The government would pay for this service.

The other proposal involved the setting up of two schemes - one to help families replace old appliances with newer ones and the other for every household to get  a water saving kit.

This was already being done in Gozo and was estimated to reduce the water consumption of every household by 25 per cent, Dr Muscat said.
