I must express my mounting irritation at the constant reference to Gozo as “Il-gżira Għawdxija” (Gozitan island) instead of Il-Gżira t’Għawdex or simply Għawdex on television and radio by newscasters, politicians and others.

After all, we do not refer to Malta as “Il-gżira Maltija”. Only Comino and Cominotto should qualify as a “gżira Għawdxija”.

Malta and Gozo and the rest of the archipelago are collectively referred to as Il-Gżejjer Maltin, or the Maltese Islands.
