The Civil Court has ordered Bank of Valletta to pay €160,209 to Customs as duties over furniture and equipment moved to its offices from Bank of Valletta International, its former offshore subsidiary.

The judgement was handed down by Mr Justice Joseph Zammit McKeon.

The items had been purchased duty free in the early 1990s.

The case had been dragging since 2007, when the Comptroller of Customs first demanded the payment of duties when BOVI was no longer considered as an 'offshore’ institution.
