Alternattiva Demokratika

 

Michael Briguglio, 37, was elected chairman of Alternattiva Demokratika in 2009 succeeding Arnold Cassola.

For long a social activist with left-leaning group Graffitti, Mr Briguglio was elected for the first time to the Sliema council in 2003 on behalf of AD.

He was re-elected to the council in 2006 but lost his seat three years later. In a snap election held last year in Sliema, Mr Briguglio regained his council seat.

Born on March 29, 1975 he is the youngest of two. He was educated at the Ħamrun Junior Lyceum and graduated in sociology at the University of Malta in 1998.

He is in the process of obtaining a doctorate in Sociology and is a full-time lecturer at the University’s sociology department after having lectured at the Junior College. He is the author of a number of academic papers with a sociological, political and economic theme.

As an activist, he was involved in the creation of various environmental campaign groups and was a founding member of the cross-party pro-divorce lobby group in 2010.

Mr Briguglio is also a drummer and plays with various rock bands, including Norm Rejection and Dripht.

He lives in Sliema with his son David.
