Conti: Cagliari captain Daniele Conti has signed a new contract which will see him bring up 15 years’ service with the club. The 33-year-old’s contract was due to expire at the end of the season but the club confirmed yesterday that he has signed a 12-month extension. Conti joined the Rossoblu from Roma in 1999.

Broke: Zimbabwe may be forced to withdraw from the 2014 World Cup qualifying competition as the national football association has no money for a fixture in Egypt during March. “There is no money to pay for travel expenses and other incidentals,” said Zimbabwe Football Association vice-president Ndumiso Gumede.

Fryers: Tottenham signed former Manchester United defender Zeki Fryers from Standard Liege yesterday. Fryers quit United to join Liege just six months ago, but he has been lured back to England by Tottenham’s offer. The 20-year-old will initially link up with Tottenham’s development squad as he looks to win a place in boss Andre Villas-Boas’s first-team plans.

Shawcross: Stoke City captain Ryan Shawcross has committed himself to the club by agreeing a new five-and-a-half-year deal yesterday. Shawcross, 25, joined Stoke from Manchester United in 2008.

Wilson: Kelvin Wilson will serve a two-match ban after being found guilty of violent conduct by the Scottish FA. The Celtic defender was issued with a notice of complaint by SFA compliance officer Vincent Lunny for “by striking an opposing player, John Baird, with his elbow” during Celtic’s 2-0 win at Dens Park. Wilson contested the charge but it was upheld with the suspension applied with immediate effect.

Joel: Wigan boss Roberto Martinez is running the rule over Atletico Madrid’s Spain U-21 goalkeeper Joel. The 22-year-old managed just three games last season before he was shunted back to the bench and, despite impressing during a loan spell at Rayo Vallecano, has been restricted again this term.
