More than 240 people took the plunge in the cold December sea at St Julian’s yesterday, braving swarms of jellyfish and biting cold to raise €10,000 for L-Istrina.

Today you are facing a bigger challenge because of the cold... and don’t let the jellyfish bite!

Organised by Thomas Smith, a record 247 swimmers of all ages took part in the annual fundraiser that has run into its 14th edition. The youngest swimmer was 11 years old and the eldest 76.

Hundreds, including family members and friends, gathered at the pier to encourage the swimmers, hand over towels and warm clothes and take photos and videos of the event.

Although the weather was beautiful – without a hint of a breeze – heavy, thick patches of scum floated on the sea, whipped up and brought to shore by the strong winds over the past week.

The swarms of jellyfish were also a concern for the swimmers and Civil Protection Department personnel drove their speedboats around in tight circles to push away the stingers.

On getting out of the water, the swimmers were greeted by President George Abela who, in a few words before starting the event with a foghorn blast, thanked them for their effort.

“L-Istrina has brought about great happiness to the Maltese people. Thank you for your generosity. Today you are facing a bigger challenge because of the cold... and don’t let the jellyfish bite,” he joked.

A woman standing on the quay taking photos had a close escape as she missed her footing and fell into a thick swarm of jellyfish before she was quickly helped out.

The Thomas Smith Charity Swim started in 1999 by Anton Buttigieg and some friends.

“The weather was horrible and I was challenged to go swim. I said I would do it but only if they collected money for charity,” Mr Buttigieg said. He has never missed a year since.
