What comes to mind when the word ‘circus’ is mentioned?

With the current adverts for the Naxxar circus popping up everywhere, I would say the 400kg Siberian Tiger comes to mind, apart from the typical acts that make up circuses. Andrew Bartolo, 19, Mcast Higher National Diploma in ICT Software Development.

I mainly think of clowns, tents, colours and, inevitably, animals because now they have become part of circuses and you can’t really imagine a circus without them. Carla Magro, 20, Bachelor of Arts in English (Hons).

When the word ‘circus’ is mentioned, people think of gymnastics and acrobatics in mid-air. Nowadays especially, people also tend to think more of the animals trained to do tricks and the issue this raises. Christopher Debono, 23, Mcast Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Construction Engineering.

Is there any reason to justify circuses?

If no animals were forced to perform, then yes, circuses would be justifiable. Andrew Bartolo

If there were no animals, I would say yes because they are a lot of fun and the children love them, especially the clowns and acrobats. Carla Magro

It depends. If the animals are trained and treated fairly, and no laws are broken and no animal is taken advantage of to entertain people, then these factors may justify circuses. Christopher Debono

What would you change about the circus?

If animals are to be part of circuses, then I would change their methods of training. I would ban torture methods in favour of positive encouragement. However, fun can be had without animals having to lose their freedom in return. Andrew Bartolo

Mainly the animals and animal cruelty. There should be sanctions against animal cruelty or strict regulations. Carla Magro

If animals are being maltreated simply to please audiences, then I would ban circuses. The treatment of the animals is the main issue. Christopher Debono
