President appeals to public officials to show moral and ethical values
President George Abela this evening appealed to public officials to respect their position and behave in line with the highest moral and ethical values.
In his Christmas message, the President spoke about the recent developments in the judiciary saying that like the rest of the nation, he had also been shocked and concerned at the allegations made but he did not lose confidence in the judiciary, as most of its members did their duty honestly and with integrity.
At the same time, he was comforted by the fact that the country had systems with which to ensure that no one was above the law. But although there could be a continuous debate about reforms, no reform could guarantee public officials with integrity.
It was only the appointees themselves who could guarantee this by behaving according to the highest moral and ethical values their position required.
Dr Abela hoped that the forthcoming electoral campaign would be cordial and one where reciprocal respect was shown by all parties with rational arguments being made without personal attacks.
The President’s message in full can be read in the pdf link below.

The President is so right but in order for public officials to show ethical and moral values those appointed must have been appointed on the basis of merit and not the result of some other method of being appointed. For how can anyone be ethical and moral in his behaviour when his or her appointment was not ethical or moral in the first place.
And this is where the problem lies in my opinion.

I agree with you. Malta as a nation gained an amazing President. Indeed the PL lost a great man. You dont have to be a wise man to come to that conclusion !

Wise words from the head of state. Will they be heeded? Hon Franco Debono has been saying very much the same thing all year. Christmas will pass and all those at the top will conveniently forget what is said in this week's speeches. I'm a realist and I've seen too many things to believe in politicians any more. They must be the ones to make the change.

I have no doubt that his Excellency shall go down in history as one of Malta’s most loved presidents. He is humble, hard-working, straightforward and objective. I usually disagree that political figures retain their post ad aeternum but in his Excellency case I would definitely make an exception. I truly wish that as a nation we could petition so he could serve another term. May God bless him!

In the last ten years I have been astounded as the improper behaviour of some officials in Civil Service, Courts, Sports, Banks, Politics, Education, Notaries research on homes, Lawyers, Some police manners and others. I must say that most are excellently deported but those few make great new so please listen to the President. A Healthy year and a Happy Christmas to all.

President George Abela have shown that, no matter what colour you are
when there is a will there is a way in politics to be neutral, HOPE it will be
a lesson to all those who are in a position to serve people !!!

It's amazing, everyone gives their two pence worth on the most mundane topics, and an item like this goes silent.
I think President Abela has really left his mark on this country and managed to do a lot of good. A good man of not many words, but with a lot if resolve. Pity there aren't more around - our politicians should take note.

An honest and much needed request that all to whom it applies would do well to respect and obey. The voice of reason and common sense with the interests of the Maltese people at heart. Ignore it at your peril.

Unfortunately the politicians have their own agenda - to advance themselves and their families first, and stay in power second, and third do as little as possible, with reform and integrity coming in last of all it seems.
