Gozo's contribution to GDP - 5.3%
Provisional estimates for last year indicate that Gozo’s contribution to national Gross Domestic Product at market prices was 5.3 per cent, or €344 million, the National Statistics Office said this morning.
Gross Value Added for Malta increased by three per cent in 2011, while that for Gozo went up by 2.5 per cent.
Almost all industries registered an increase in total employment in both regions in 2011, although both regions experienced a decrease in employment in mining and quarrying; manufacturing; electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply; water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation activities.
Gozo also experienced a drop in employment in construction activities.
A decrease in unemployment was registered for both Malta and Gozo in 2011.
While Malta experienced an increase in population, Gozo registered a slight drop.

For those saying that Gozo are just not paying taxes .
First of all GDP is the monetary value of all the finished goods and services produced within a country's borders in a specific time period. AND NOT THE TAX
How do you think that Gozo can produce high GDP when comparing it to Malta , since it has a fairly small amount of population and 90% of the companies locally are established in Malta.

Some of the comments to this article are rather illuminating on the mindset of some of our Maltese brethern and makes me wonder whether they have anything of substance to say about anything.

If ever proof was needed, this is that the Tunnel Vision is pie-in-the-sky by Chris Said as a political boost in his domain. I fully understand the Gozitans and their plight but I am sorry to say that (being on Gozo every fortnight) even though I love the island and its inhabitants, I only get fiscal receipts on average 5.3% of the time! But then, Gozo is (unofficially) independent...

Gozitans complain that their only (or rather main) source of income is tourism. However they treat the tourist rather selfishly. I for one love the island but not its inhabitants. Obviously, generalizing is always bad but it seems that the norm is that. I've lost count of the times I visited a restaurant/hotel/place and the owner/workers are rude to us.

I never had such an experience and visit Gozo several times a year. On the contrary most restaurants in gozo make authentic food, which you do not find in Malta, or otherwise twice the price. If you "love the island but not its inhabitants" you do not need to visit and can go somewhere else if you wish. But I bet that people like you will always find something to complain about!

The main source of Gozo's income must be receipts from the Central Government under the many guises that this takes, from public sector employment to invalidity pensions, etc, etc, etc!

The Gozitans are our brothers and sisters. They ain't heavy. Malta and Gozo are one. Many Gozitans have a very hard life to earn a living. It was mean to bring this bit of news at Christmas.

Being a Gozitan wholesaler, my vat is paid in Malta and we only pay the mark up as in Gozo there are no importers, or very few which are very small. We could raise our GDP if let's say Enamalta was registered as a Gozitan company with it's fuel and power divisions both included. Some business do try to evade tax but that is common on both islands, believe me

So Gozo`s contribution to GDP is 5.3%,now let`s see in parliament there are 5 Gozitan members out of 69 so Gozo is represented by 7.24% members and GDP is 5.3 that`s not bad and we have to take into account all those Maltese with a Gozitan ID card but work and live in Malta and also those hundreds of Gozitan workers who work and live 5 days a week in Malta,is their GDP added too.

Is Tax evasion, year in year out,...a serious sin?
Michael Gatt

We should get a figure as to the amount of Taxes, both direct and indirect, that the people of Gozo contribute...would be interesting to say the least....

V.R. & M. G. Unfortunately Tax and Vat evation is rampant not only in G ozo but also in Malta, and it is therefore not fair to make a blanket statement only on what happens in Gozo.

With some more law enforcement Gozo will definetly contribute more......
Unfortunetly, Tax evasion in Gozo is still the norm....or better say a culture....

Mr Vella
Try to come and live in Gozo, and then see if it's a culture .............
We depend from local Tourism and as well from the 2% of foreign tourism that they visit Gozo. So you could say that we are Seasonable
We Don't have foreign investors to come and open direct on the island .

Messrs Rodenas, Gatt and Vella how dare you be so arrogant and irresponsible in accusing others of anything you haven't brought forward one iota of a proof and, to say it all, of a crime which had been rampant in public departments in your own homeland VAT department for instance.

The multi-million Euro question: "Is the Gozo Tunnel economically viable?"
James Dimech
Dec 24th 2012, 12:49
So the people who generate 5.3% of the country's GDP want a tunnel, loads of "pjaciri" and super special treatment for everything on the face of this planet.
The Maltese would be so much better off if they ditched Gozo and left it to its own devices :)
George Camilleri
Dec 24th 2012, 14:37
James:
A tunnel would automatically contribute to more GDP output by means of improved infrastructure lines and swifter trade.
The culture of 'pjaciri' is a nation wide problem which finds its root in Maltese political practice, so it's not simply a Gozitan "thing". It's to be tackled from all fronts.
Special treatment such as a run-down hospital and no serious career possibilities?

5% of 5 billion is 250 000 000 therefore mr camilleri i don't think a tunnel is viable at all

p.s. excellent numbers registered by our country!!

Was the Prime Minister really joking last week when he asked whether Gozo was ready for independence? With 7.7% guaranteed representation in Parliament, notwithstanding its total population, and 5.3% contribution to the GDP (69% average), high NI benefits and low IT revenue, something must be really wrong in the state of Denmark. Who will act out Prof Monti for our sister island?
