The military relationship between the AFM and the US military has been strengthened with the handing over of 30 sets of night vision goggles and other communications gear from the US government.

Valued at more than €630,000, the equipment will assist the AFM in the execution of their duties, particularly in the area of border control.

Commander William Woityra said the US looked forward to building further the strong relationship aimed at countering the trafficking of drugs and illicit materials in the central Mediterranean.

This latest donation is part of a larger grants package, which totals more than $4.7 million, and will include two nine-meter defender class response boats with thermal image sensors, trucks and trailers and associated training.

The two tow trucks are expected in Malta early next year, while the boats are expected to be delivered by the third quarter of 2013.
