A new Labour government will work to eliminate poverty from Malta, party leader Joseph Muscat said this morning.

Speaking during a visit to the Millennium Chapel in Paceville, Dr Muscat said that poverty in Malta had increased from 19 to 21 per cent with 88,000 people being at risk of poverty. These figures, he said, were confirmed by the European Commission.

He thanked all those who worked at the Millennium Chapel, where families were helped to grow and find direction.

Fr Saviour Grima and Fr Hilary Tagliaferro said that 250 families were currently receiving a service from the Chapel.

These services included food grants, counselling and life and parental skills.
