London has been named as the host city for the 2017 IPC Athletics World Champion-ships, the Mayor of London Boris Johnson has announced.

The championships, organised by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), will be held at the Olympic Stadium in July, one month before the same venue stages the IAAF World Athletics Championships.

“By bringing the IPC Championships to our wonderful Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park just a month before the World Championships, the capital is poised to recreate the magic of London 2012,” Johnson said.

It will be the first time one city has hosted the two championships side-by-side after it was argued during the bidding process that London 2012 justifies the return of international Paralympic competition to the capital.

The athletics at the 2012 Paralympics drew huge crowds of 80,000 for every session and attracted more than a billion television viewers worldwide.

The IPC athletics worlds are the largest single-sport competition for athletes with an impairment in the world and take place on a bi-annual basis.
