The brand new Barrakka lift did not operate yesterday because of the strong winds that hit the island.

The lifts are equipped with an automatic cut-off safety device triggered during gale force winds, Transport Malta said yesterday.

Inaugurated last week by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Transport Minister Austin Gatt, around 7,000 people used the lift in a span of three days.

The lift can carry a total of 800 people every hour with each of its two cabins taking up to 21 passengers. Each trip takes around 26 seconds.
