Studying abroad
A personal experience
Ryan Zammit
It is still not common for young Maltese people to study abroad, to experience life without family and friends in a foreign country with its peculiarities, cultural differences and unknowns.
Ryan Zammit contacted The Zone and offered to share his experience of living abroad while studying for his PhD in knowledge management – the ups and downs; the value of being independent and taking care of things on your own.

Studying abroad is a massive investment. Without some form of governmental assistance it is virtually impossible for the average person to study abroad.
This year the Maltese government opted to grant a scholarship (STEPS) to its chosen few, completely ignoring individuals who are clearly more competent and qualified, not to mention more in need of financial assistance. But this goes unnoticed..

Well done, the government should encourage more PhD students.
Let's have a strong university.

This is a major issue in Malta, experience. All the theory, but no practice. By the age of 26, I had already gained 9 years Office experience in various areas of Finance.

It's people who learn only by experience who ruin the economy!
