Outbound tourist trips in October increased by 17 per cent, amounting to 25,066, when compared to the same month last year, the National Statistics Office said.

Trips to Italy and the UK remained the most popular among residents of Malta, with shares of 31 and 18 per cent respectively.

European markets, except for Germany, recorded increases when compared to last year.

The number of trips to EU destinations was estimated at 21,591 and a further 3,474 trips were non-EU cities. These markets grew by 14 and 39 per cent respectively.

The number of those who went abroad totalled 273,001 in the first 10 months of the year, up by six per cent when compared to the previous year.

An estimated 86 per cent of outbound passengers chose to visit EU destinations.
