If you’re sick of Android and Apple phones and you want something that stands out from the pack, the Lumia 920 is definitely something to keep an eye out for.

First things first – the Nokia Lumia 920 looks good. It’s being offered in eye-catching hues of yellow and red (and the traditional black and white).

The square shell that doesn’t feel big to hold, even considering the 4.5-inch screen. Nokia also made sure this device can withstand dings, dents and drops, using a ceramic compound for the keys and plates, giving it added durability as well as a more substantial feel. The polycarbonate and glass exterior is beautifully designed and gives the iPhone a run for its money.

You can’t call the 4.5-inch touch display anything but exceptional – the IPS screen works wonderfully and the Pure Motion HD+ feature produces crystal-clear images and videos. It’s an amazing screen that challenges the overhyped iPhone’s retina display. In comparison, the iPhone features a four-inch 1136x640 resolution at 326 PPI, while the Lumia beats the iPhone with a larger 4.5-inch 332 PPI display.

The display also has some innovative features, like polarisation filter and light-sensing technology which enhance viewing by adjusting brightness, even in sunlight. In short, it’s a fantastic display for streaming movies, viewing photos and browsing the web. The iPhone was king, but it has competition now.

The 8.7-megapixel camera will not disappoint. The Lumia 920 comes with an innovative image-stabilizing technology, dubbed Pure View.

Your photos will be clearer and sharper than ever before, and it’s actually hard to take a blurry photo. Nokia also developed a floating lens feature that works like a steady-cam without the waist-mount.

The Lumia 920 is one of the first devices to run on Microsoft’s new Windows 8 platform, which is either a good or bad thing.

There’s no hiding it – Windows isn’t for everyone. On the plus side, its interface uses a cleaner tile arrangement for a streamlined layout that is less cluttered than other platforms. You’ll be able to launch apps, grab information and update statuses from the home screen. But Windows is still third behind iOS and Android when it comes to app volume, so there’s a significant lack of apps from third-party developers.

If you don’t mind the app scarcity, the internal hardware is sure to please: the 1.5-gigahertz dual-core Snapdragon chip keeps everything running smoothly while the 2,000 mAh battery with wireless charging is generous.

Overall, the Lumia 920 is one of the best Nokia devices in recent years – the design is gorgeous, the display is top-notch and the camera is exceptional.

It offers some innovative features that you won’t find elsewhere else. But the big question is – are you willing to take the plunge on Windows 8?
