Melita shock champions Valletta

Melita 2 Valletta 1
Melita created the biggest surprise of this season’s BOV Premier League when they beat champions Valletta 2-1 at the Hibs Stadium today.
Valletta enjoyed the better fare of possession for most of the first half but for all their possession they only threatened through long range efforts from Ian Zammit and Ryan Fenech.
Instead Melita struck in their first real attacking move on the stroke of half-time when Andrew Caruana Scicluna slid the ball into the path of Luke Micallef who beat the City offside trap, rounded goalkeeper Matthew Bartolo to deposit the ball into an empty net.
Valletta soon responded at the start of the second half and on 48 minutes Ian Zammit nodded the ball into the path of Leandro who headed the ball into the net.
Here, the champions laid siege to the Melita goal and were unlucky to see efforts from Ian Zammit and substitute Joseph Ogunnuppe coming off the woodwork.
However, it was Melita who grabbed the winner when in time added on substitute Jean Pierre Attard released Micallef who was clean through, dribbled Bartolo to hit the ball into an empty net.
Melita’s George Gribbon was voted as the BOV Player of the match.

What seems strange to me is that normally a team of this quality (assuming Valletta has the best local players within their ranks and some of the best foreign ones) misses a maximum of two games in a row, whilst this bad string of results now sum up to six league games (excl. Qormi and Hamrun trophy match).
I find it difficult to beleive that many players went off form at the same time.
