According to the Mayan Calendar, the world will come to an end on Friday, December 21, 2012. The end of the world has been a much debated topic lately. To get more insight on the subject, Marika Tabone spoke to George Tabone, who has studied the Maya culture and its prophecies.

George Tabone explains that the Mayan civilisation lived between 2,500 BC and AD 250 in the subtropical parts of Central America, in the area where today Guatemala, Honduras and the Yucatan part of Mexico lie.

The Maya believed humanity would enter an era of justice and abundance

The Maya constructed pyramids and temples, and left artifacts related to astronomy. They were not only able to predict future eclipses but also determined the position of the Earth’s solar system with respect to the Milky Way galaxy four millennia ago.

The Maya also had an intriguing calendar, which is engraved in a stone. It was deciphered using the Dresden Codex, a very important surviving Mayan book. The calendar works in cycles which ranged from that of a single day, up to 1,872,000 days, equivalent to 5,125.36 years.

The Mayans believed their civilisation existed in the fifth cycle of the sun. By synchronising their calendars to ours, it was found that this fifth cycle started in 3114 BC, and ends on December 21, 2012.

They also believed that other four great civilisations existed before this one, but that each of these ended in a catastrophe at the end of a cycle. However, Tabone stresses that the Maya never said this last cycle will have the same fate. On the contrary, they believed humanity would enter an era of justice and abundance.

Based on his knowledge of the Mayan prophecies, Tabone said the changes that may occur should be more of a spiritual than physical nature, since the Maya were a very spiritual civilisation. They believed the changes that occur through each of the cycles are related to human consciousness.

According to the Mayan astronomy, at each start or end of a cycle, the Earth’s solar system would be in alignment with the centre of the galaxy. The Sun, a powerful source of energy at the central core of the galaxy, would receive a powerful surge of energy that changes its polarity. This would produce a great cosmic event that would propel human consciousness to a higher level. According to the Maya, this process would bring us to the doorstep of a Golden Age.

Tabone interprets the Mayan prophesy as meaning that December 21 would mark the end of an era and the start of a new one – the beginning of a phase that would gradually enhance human consciousness to higher levels of spiritual revelations.

It would be like the closure of a divine contract and an opening of another one, whereby experiences such as famine, shortages, injustice, disease and corruption would cease. According to the Mayan scripture and their elders, this new contract would be based on unity with attributes of abundance, equality and justice.

He said that although the world has lately been experiencing more severe weather conditions and seismic movements, these should not be interpreted as signs of a forthcoming catastrophe.

The Sun is believed to be entering a phase of high activity. Such solar activity is directly connected to the Earth’s climate and it has also been proven that it can contribute to the movement of the tectonic plates, causing seismic waves.

Nevertheless, Tabone said we cannot attribute these conditions on Earth solely to nature. Crude oil is the lubricant on which the tectonic plates shift. Excessive extraction of this oil can contribute to rigid tectonic plates crushing against each other.

This might also be a reason for the increase in seismic activities being experienced lately.

He is convinced that we will wake up on December 22 and realise that any predicted catastrophe did not happen. Nevertheless, according to the Mayan interpretation, it should not be excluded that we might experience some kind of phenomena. Unfortunately, no records exist of what might have happened 5,200 years ago, the last time the solar system was in alignment with the central plane of the galaxy.

“Although there is no sign of an impending catastrophe, we should still be prepared – not for our demise, but for our transformation to a higher level in consciousness,” Tabone said.

The Mayan elders predicted that any kind of physical or spiritual transformation might be smooth for some and traumatic for others. Although we are not bound to face any kind of catastrophe, we should still prepare ourselves to be able to absorb the prophesised energies,” he continued.

“What we can learn from the Mayan prophesies and other related theory is that we should stop and think about how we live our life and how we treat others in our daily lives.

“If we want to be part of humanity that will live in the Golden Age for generations to come, we have to start living our lives in the spirit of oneness. We should consider ourselves a lucky generation to be living at this important time in history.”

According to the Maya, Tabone said, we have been given the privilege to lay the foundation for a new age. “So it is now up to us to take advantage of the golden times ahead.”
