Finance Minister Tonio Fenech is reported to have referred to the fact that minimum wage earners will be paying income tax as a result of the Budget measures as a “storm in a tea-cup”. For Fenech and his Cabinet colleagues, including the Prime Minister, who awarded themselves a €500 per week increase in their salary – which has since been suspended – a €60 to €70 tax is certainly “a storm in a teacup”.

Indeed, I would say “a storm in a teaspoon”. However, for mini-mum wage earners, such an amount is quite substantial. What an insensitive lot we have in government.
