A conference entitled ‘A Child is Born... Why I am not Happy’ was recently held at the Xewkija primary school. The conference’s aim was to increase awareness about post-natal depression. It was organised by the Gozo Mental Health Association in collaboration with the Gozo Ministry.

In her opening address Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono praised the association’s work, especially in holding this conference, to help Gozitans live a better life.

Other speakers at the conference were Josephine Cefai, who spoke on the biological change before and after birth, Dr Ethel Felice, who spoke on ante- and post-natal depression, and Dr Rita Borg Xuereb, who spoke on mental health during pregnancy and after.

Dar Ġużeppa Debono social worker Nancy Portelli and two mothers related their experiences, while association president Pauline Camilleri concluded the conference.

The event also included a contemporary dance by Melanie Zammit, while artist Paul Falzon captured the conference’s theme on canvas.
