A sustainable garden named after Nicole Zahra, a Kalkara pupil who died tragically this year, was recently opened in Triq is-Sienja, Kalkara.

Nicole, a member of Kalkara primary school’s Ekoskola committee, came up with the idea to turn a derelict part of the school grounds into a garden.

The area was cleared by local council workers, olive trees donated by Kalkara’s St Joseph Band Club were planted, information boards and solar lights bought through an HSBC (Climate-Initiative) grant were set up, and benches designed by the children themselves and made by council workers out of recycled wood and used tyres were installed.
