Police have arrested a second man in connection with the murder of a man in Mosta, sources said.

No details about the second suspect were immediately available yesterday.

Joseph Cutajar, known as Il-Lion, was shot dead in Mill Street, Mosta on Wednesday morning.

On Thursday, police had arrested Paul Degabriele who was still in detention yesterday after being questioned at length by investigators looking into the Mosta murder.

The sources said that gunshot residue tests conducted on Mr Degabriele’s person proved negative. However, he is being subjected to further tests.

Investigators believe a rifle, possibly a Kalashnikov, was used to kill Mr Cutajar but, so far, the weapon has not been found.

None of the weapons seized by investigators so far can be linked to the murder.

Mr Cutajar, 46, originally from Marsascala but living with his partner in Mosta, was hit by several bullets; one to his head proved fatal, an autopsy revealed.

Investigations also continue into the murder of Josef Grech, 41, from Balzan who was found dead after being shot in the head in Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq early on Wednesday. The sources said that both cases were being investigated separately although there were similarities that could possibly connect the two.
